With Eyes Wide Open: Evaluating EMDR & Christian Integration
1. Content Description
This training examines the integration of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing within a Christian counseling framework. Participants will gain an overview of EMDR’s theoretical foundation, including the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model, and its application in the treatment of trauma and distress.
The course explores key components of EMDR, including resourcing, positive cognition development, and the float back technique, while critically evaluating areas that may raise theological or ethical concerns for Christian clinicians. Special attention is given to issues such as pre-birth memory interpretations and the use of protective figures within resourcing.
Participants will learn how to ethically and clinically integrate Christian faith into EMDR without compromising evidence-based practice, professional ethics, or biblical integrity. The training emphasizes informed consent, client autonomy, clinician self-awareness, and the development of structured, replicable approaches to faith integration.
2. Learning Objectives
After completing this training, participants will be able to:
- Describe the foundational principles of EMDR, including the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model and the eight-phase treatment structure.
- Identify key EMDR techniques, including resourcing, positive cognition installation, and the float back method.
- Analyze potential ethical and theological concerns that may arise when integrating EMDR with a Christian worldview.
- Differentiate between symbolic emotional material and literal memory recall in the context of EMDR processing.
- Apply ethically sound strategies for integrating Christian faith into EMDR while maintaining adherence to professional standards and evidence-based practice.
- Demonstrate the use of informed consent practices related to faith integration in trauma treatment.
