Episode 87
Am I Forced to Compromise My Faith to Keep My License?
1. Content Description
This continuing education training explores the ethical and clinical integration of spiritually relevant concerns within Christian counseling practice. Participants will examine how to address harmful behaviors, value conflicts, shame, spiritual distress, and relational dysfunction in ways that maintain compassion, professionalism, informed consent, and client autonomy.
The course discusses common tensions faced by Christian clinicians, including fears surrounding licensure, concerns about compromising biblical convictions, avoiding difficult conversations, and navigating the emotional exhaustion that may arise when counselors feel spiritually divided within their professional roles. Participants will explore the distinction between conviction, shame, and religious scrupulosity, as well as the importance of differentiating spiritual concerns from underlying psychological, relational, or mental health conditions.
Special attention is given to ethical faith integration practices, including permission-based spiritual exploration, avoiding value imposition, maintaining clinical competence, and recognizing the impact of spiritual language on vulnerable clients. The training incorporates ethical principles reflected across ACA, NASW, APA, and AAMFT standards related to client welfare, informed consent, cultural sensitivity, and avoidance of harm.
Participants will also examine the difference between ethical specialization and discriminatory practice, including how counselors may ethically develop Christian counseling niches while remaining professionally compliant and clinically responsible. The course further explores the role of counselor worldview, transparency in clinical identity, and the misconception of counselor neutrality within therapeutic settings.
Practical strategies are provided for discussing spiritually relevant behaviors, relational patterns, emotional distress, and faith-related concerns without shaming, coercion, or spiritual bypassing. The training emphasizes compassionate accountability, ethical discernment, professional clarity, and the creation of emotionally safe therapeutic environments for clients seeking faith-integrated care.
