Episode 95
Recognizing and Treating Scrupulosity
1. Content Description
Christian counselors frequently encounter clients who struggle with persistent fears related to salvation, sin, forgiveness, intrusive religious thoughts, or uncertainty about their relationship with God. While these concerns may initially appear to be matters of spiritual growth or theological understanding, they may also represent scrupulosity, a religious presentation of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
This training provides an overview of the clinical characteristics of scrupulosity, differential diagnosis, assessment strategies, evidence-based treatment considerations, and thoughtful faith integration. Participants will learn how to distinguish healthy spiritual conviction from anxiety-driven compulsions, recognize reassurance-seeking behaviors, understand the role of Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), and integrate Scripture and spiritual practices without unintentionally reinforcing the obsessive-compulsive cycle. Practical case examples and clinical considerations are included throughout.
2. Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:
- Differentiate scrupulosity from healthy spiritual conviction and other clinical presentations.
- Identify common obsessions, compulsions, and reassurance-seeking behaviors associated with religious OCD.
- Describe evidence-based treatment approaches for scrupulosity, including psychoeducation and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP).
- Apply ethical and clinically appropriate faith integration strategies that support treatment without reinforcing obsessive-compulsive symptoms.
