Episode 94

Evaluating Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) Through a Biblical Worldview

1. Content Description

This continuing education program examines Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) as an evidence-based treatment modality through both a clinical and biblical framework. Participants will review the theoretical foundations of IPT, the research supporting its effectiveness, and the four interpersonal problem areas addressed within the model: grief, role disputes, role transitions, and chronic interpersonal difficulties. The program also explores current research on the relationship between social connection and mental health while evaluating where IPT aligns with biblical principles and where Scripture provides a broader understanding of human relationships, identity, suffering, and restoration. Practical case examples illustrate ethical approaches to integrating Scripture into treatment when clients request faith-based counseling, while maintaining professional standards, informed consent, and evidence based practice.

2. Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the theoretical foundations, primary goals, and evidence base of Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT).
  2. Identify the four interpersonal problem areas addressed within IPT and explain how each contributes to psychological distress.
  3. Evaluate the principles of IPT through a biblical worldview, distinguishing areas of alignment from areas in which Scripture extends beyond the model.
  4. Apply ethical strategies for integrating Scripture into IPT-informed treatment when clients explicitly request Christian faith integration, while maintaining evidence-based clinical practice and professional ethical standards.
  5. Differentiate between clinical concepts such as grief, forgiveness, reconciliation, boundaries, and church hurt in order to support treatment planning from both a psychological and biblical perspective.
