When A Therapy Session Goes Public: Ethics, Boundaries, and Faith

1. Content Description

This continuing education program examines ethical considerations in clinical practice through the analysis of a publicly shared case involving a therapist-client interaction discussed across digital platforms. The training explores key issues including informed consent, scope of practice, use of therapeutic modalities (such as EMDR), self-disclosure, countertransference, dual relationships, documentation, and appropriate termination of services.

Special attention is given to the ethical complexities introduced by modern platforms such as podcasts and social media, including the risks of client identification, exploitation, and boundary violations. The course also addresses the intersection of professional ethics and personal values, including faith integration in counseling, while maintaining adherence to established ethical standards.

Participants will be guided in identifying clinical red flags, evaluating therapist decision-making, and applying ethical frameworks to real-world scenarios. The goal is to strengthen clinical judgment, reinforce ethical responsibility, and support the delivery of competent, client-centered care.

2. Learning Objectives (NBCC-Compliant)

After completing this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify ethical violations and clinical red flags related to informed consent, modality use, and therapist boundaries.
  2. Describe appropriate procedures for conducting biopsychosocial assessments and determining treatment readiness.
  3. Explain the ethical use of self-disclosure and differentiate between therapeutic and non-therapeutic disclosure.
  4. Recognize signs of countertransference and determine appropriate responses, including consultation and referral.
  5. Evaluate risks associated with dual relationships and boundary crossings in therapeutic settings.
  6. Apply ethical standards to decisions regarding termination of services, including preparation, referral, and continuity of care.
  7. Analyze ethical risks related to public platforms (e.g., podcasts, social media) and implement strategies to protect client confidentiality.
